For the 1982 TAM Leeuwarden introduced the Frisian tail band. The The Hague General Staff disapproved this due to fear for an "flag incident" and other far-fetched reasons. By staff order the bands had to be removed (and reappeared in 1988).
The Dutch NF-5s were painted grey in their haydays. Note the droptanks are still in the old "cold war" colours. This was the normal colour scheme in the 1970s and early 80s.
316 Squadron. In 1991 they changed from NF-5 to F-16. Today the squadron is disbanded, it's emblem and heritage taken over by 302 (Apache) Squadron. The times are changing...
92 Sqn. was still very alive at the end of the cold war. The unit was disbanded in 1991. Their Phantoms were more or less regular visitors at Leeuwarden.
After the Starfighter was wfu the NF-5 had to take over QRA duties for a while. Later that year the F-16 became operational. The Freedom Fighters with sidewinders were just seen for a very brief periode.
