Our Taxy for a part of our Trip - belongs to Voyennaya Transportnaya Aviatsia (VTA). Formed by Russian Ministry of Defence. All a/c operated in Aeroflot c/s. Became the 61st Air Army in 1998.

Flying around now as RF-94105, 06 RED was one of two Blackjack's named after "Il'ya Muromets" - an epic hero of russia. Picture was taken at a time when the Russian Air Force experimented with different new insignias, like the double eagle on the tail.

Flying around now as RF-94105, 06 RED was one of two Blackjack's named "Il'ya Muromets". 05 RED was the first with that title, but was renamed to "Aleksandr Golovanov" later. In the background you can see the full white's 02 and 01 RED.

During the late 1980s, a number of Tu-22KDs where rebuilt with an ECM system replacing the tail gun. This comprised the SPS-151, SPS-152 or SPS-153 system in a streamlined fairing.

The Tu-22U was the least evolutionary of the entire Tu-22 family. Most of them where based at Dyagilevo near Ryazan, the main training base for Long-Range Aviation. The 43rd training centre (43 TsBP i PLS) was located there.

This Tupolev belonged to 1st squadron of 121 TBAP at Machulishchi, now in the independent republic of Belarus.

By the mid-1980's, the Soviet Air Force had recognised the inadequacy of the tail gun and began with refitting it by an ECM-system instead. This Tu-22KD is showing its SPS-151 type ECM Tail, maybe a SPS-100 Reseda System active jammer unit.
