Hi all,
Wanted to give everyone a heads-up that the minimum photo size will be increased from 1000px to 1200px starting December first. There was a time when 1000 or even 800px made sense, but with monitor resolutions going higher and higher all the time, 1000px actually looks pretty small. The max width will remain at 1600px. So, please do what you have to do to get ready for the update. You've been warned. Thanks, Ray -Ray |

Hi Ray,
Just a question, is there any chance we could have 16-9 as an aspect ratio. Most screens are wide nowadays and most Aircraft shots benefit from this size with less distractions around the Aircraft. [ In my opinion ].. Thanks Mike.......... |

I don't know whether I fancy the increased size. I do see my pictures appear in several websites and publications. Increased file size does enhance the quality of misuse. I also do not favor ruining my pictures by adding a water mark. But this might become a necessity.

Hi Joop,
That's always a concern, but I don't think 200px is going to make that much of a difference. People will still do what they want to do. Sure, adding a watermark is another option. Mike - that's definitely something to think about. I will definitely keep it in mind. -Ray |

Still not using a 4K display I was happy with 1000pix, also for the reasons that Joop mentioned.
Changing to 1200pix will not be that much of a difference, just changing some export actions. And the watermark will be bigger. I am not a big fan of that change though, but Ray is making the rules here ;-) I would also vote for the possibility of 16/9. It's rather nice for some shots. Regards Andreas Regards |

I just encountered a new issue: for the post processing of slide scans I use NeatImage for noise reduction. This runs only for images up to 1024 pixels wide.
I could skip the NeatImage step in my post processing, but this will decrease the image quality. Is there an alternative for noise reduction in pictures lager than 1024 pixels? Joop |

Hmmm, interesting. Didn't think about that, but we have tons of images, even as high as 1600px, that are way less than 1MB. Do we need to increase the file size limit?
thanks, Ray -Ray |

@Joop: anything from the Adobe side, or you could give Affinity Photo a try. And do you save your jpgs at 100%? Going down to 90~95% might bring the file size sufficiently down without a visible loss of image quality.
And 1200pix does not make that much of a difference:

Uploading digital images I have no problem with file size. Slide scans are when using high quality (low compression) JPEG.
If I'm the only one experiencing these problems, then it is my problem. Joop |

I asked the question before, but did not get any reaction: now that I upload the files in the requested 1200pixels I encounter the problem that the file size exceeds 1024KB.
I use highest quality, lowest JPEG compression. As I also upload to other sites, that demand highest quality, I cannot upload these pictures to Airfighters anymore. Anyone else experiencing the same? Joop |

Joop,
Seems odd. Not sure if this is of any help but recently I've uploaded a few shots now at 1200 x 800px - max quality in PS and getting an average image size of 900kb. I also went through the same process with a few slide scans and have the same results with the file sizes. Tom |

Joop, what size is the file before you export as jpeg?

I start off with a 110MB 32 bits TIFF slide scan or 75MB digital image, that I process. When ready I reduce to 1200 pixels wide and do the sharpening as last step.

Nine out of ten scans are now rejected for file size.
I have had great pleasure in uploading and sharing my pictures. But fun is turning into frustration now. So I get back to 1024 pixels until the new file size of minimum 1200 pixels is implemented. After that I'm afraid my contribution to Airfighters with my older pictures will come to an end... Joop |

Sorry but this is a bad solution
Why you force the members to use 1200?! Everyone should optional to choose wich size he uploaded. I will stop upload pictures here when I can not upload my pics in 1024! |

Well, we have to keep the viewer's experience in mind. Many people now have high resolution monitors and the photos look very small. As a photo database, we have to keep a certain level of consistency. It would be a very sloppy database if we allowed users to upload at whatever size they desired. Would you like it if someone was constantly uploading 500px photos?
It's only a thought for now. If it's going to be that much trouble for many users, then we can keep it at 1024, but suggest uploading at 1200px or higher if possible? -Ray |

Sorry it was a little bit misunderstanding.
The minimum photo size should be 1000. Like now! When user upload their pictures in higher resolution, they can do it! But for me and I think many other members have personally reasons to upload pictures only in 1024. |

Evening folks,
For what its worth and my last post on the topic, I've just carried out a quick run through my process of scanned slide to 1200px x 800 px image to see what the results are. Scanned slide = a 57MB TIFF image, clean that up and edit in PS CC, crop to 1200 x 800 and save at max file size for that ratio (12) which gave me a 1.0MB image. A run through the Reduce Noise filter in PS CC resulted in a 710kb image. No doubt with taking a bit more care through the process (the above took me 10 minutes) I'd be in the 820 - 900kb image size area. Cheers, Tom |

Great! Good to know, Tom. Thanks. It's definitely possible unless you are scanning at a very high dpi for printing purposes.
Everyone, while not required, please try your best to upload at 1200px or higher. It will be a better viewing experience for everyone as monitor resolutions keep going higher and higher. Thanks! -Ray |

where is the problem? A good slide looks good in 1200 too! Then the quality remains at least!

Thats very helpful Ray. Thanks for your efforts ::thumb_grin}
So approx. 1/3 of my pics is below "the new standard". Most of these are slides since my old scanner was not so good. But with the new scanner I am currently rescanning all slides any way and reupload them here now at 1200px. It may take a while though ... |

You're welcome, Carl. Yes, it's a lot of work, but one benefit is with your new scanner, the scans are looking much better.
