K6183 ‘B’ was lost north of the Frisian Islands on 5 September, 1939, after a skirmish with a German Heinkel 115. Only the pilot, New Zealander P/O Edwards, survived and was made PoW. His three crew members are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

It has been 10 years since the Chariots of Fire Flug Werk 190 made her public debut at CF2013. The markings are those of Hauptmann Erich Rudorffer, Gruppenkommandeur of the II. Gruppe JG 54, on the Eastern Front. RFR is piloted here by Frank Parker.

Bevan Dewes on finals to Omaka's turf. NZ1044 (ex USAAF 44-33720) is in her original No.2 (Fighter) OTU livery as based at Ohakea in 1944-45. Presently it is the only airworthy Harvard in wartime configuration in New Zealand.

Calm before the storm. NH799 awaiting her pilot, Frank Parker, for a test flight, two days before the Classic Fighter Show 2023. NH799 was first restored to airworthiness by Historic Flying Ltd at Audley End, England, taking to the air on 21 January 1994.

NZ2013 was part of a diverted RAF order and was shipped directly to Auckland from Los Angeles. The Hudson is finished in the colour scheme that it would have worn when serving with No.4 Squadron, RNZAF, at Nausori, Fiji in 1943-44.

View of the cockpit section of Vildebeest NZ102. Manufactured at the Vickers factory, Weybridge, England, the aircraft was shipped to New Zealand in March 1935, and assembled at Hobsonville for delivery to the Bomber Reconnaissance Flight of the RNZAF.

Vildebeest NZ102 served with No.2 FTS, Woodbourne in early 1940 and with No.1 (GR) Squadron at Whenuapai during 1940-1941. The remains of NZ102 were acquired by the Air Force Museum in 1986 with restoration work commencing in 2002.

The white preservative layer will protect the former US Navy PBV-1A (BuAerNo.68045) and USAAF (44-34081) OA-10A while awaiting restoration by the Air Force Museum. The RNZAF operated the PBY-5 and PB2B-1 versions (serials NZ4001 to NZ4056).

With the fuselage largely from NZ415 (ex RAF LT376), parts from NZ410, NZ422 and C.19 VL352 have been used in this composite rebuild. NZ406 is in the markings of the School of General Reconnaissance, RNZAF Bell Block (New Plymouth), 1943, and coded 'G'.

NZ2504 was received by the RNZAF on 21 September 1943 as one of the first shipment of six Avengers. Issued to No.30 Squadron at Gisborne on 5 October 1943 and used both by No.30 and later, No.31 Squadron, for crew training.

Post-war Oxford I PK286 was converted to AS-65 Consul and as such served several civilian companies, registered G-AIKR. The restoration by the Air Force Museum of New Zealand has brought her back in her original Oxford configuration.

Built as an Oxford I for the RAF, the aircraft was converted into an AS-65 Consul post-war. Spending some decades with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the aircraft came to New Zealand in 2000 and is on display in her original Oxford configuration.

As the RNZAF did not operate short fuselage Merlin-powered P-40Fs, this aircraft was restored to P-40E (Allison V-1710) standard and is now on display in the main Aircraft Hall in RNZAF Pacific theatre colours as 'NZ3000'.

P3351, seen during WOW2008, has since been exported to Europe but was again offered for sale early in 2022. A return to NZ skies would be highly appreciated. Unfortunately there will be no Warbirds over Wanaka 2022. Next edition: Easter 2024.

For some 22 years the Freighters of No.41 Squadron, RNZAF, provided sterling service in the conflict zones of South East Asia. NZ5903 spent her last operational days with No.1 Squadron at Whenuapai. NZ5903 is seen here with her clamshell doors opened.

The Mk.31M Freighter was the military variant of the Mk.21 with provision for supply dropping. The large clamshell doors of the Freighter provided easy access to the (unpressurised) main hold, which had an internal volume of 2,020 cubic feet.

After arrival in New Zealand, Pioneer Aero at Ardmore fitted the aircraft with an Allison V-1710-111 engine. The Yak became ZK-YYY in February 2005. Here, under the early morning sun, Arthur Dovey's Yak is being prepared for Warbirds over Wanaka WOW 2008.

In the early 1990s six Polikarpov I-16 Ishaks and three I-153 Chaikas were recovered from crash sites in Northern Russia. The aircraft were restored by Aviarestavratsiya at Novosibirsk for the Alpine Fighter Collection. Here ZK-JIN leads I-153 ZK-JKM.

Ash-621R engined ZK-JIN made her first post-restoration flight on 9 September 1995 at Novosibirk. Two years later, on 10 October 1997, the Ishak made her first flight in New Zealand skies.

This 'Red 10' was one of three Chaikas recovered in Russia and restored in Novosibirsk for the Alpine Fighter Collection. The aircraft came to Wanaka in March 1998, but was damaged during her first flight there on the 23rd of that month.
