The surprising thing about this photo of the remains of FV-254 is that the serial and the 57th FIS insignia is still visible on the wreck after the Keflavik fire department had put it on fire a numerous times. 254 was with the 57th until 1962.
Two of the F-89Ds that operated with the 57th FIS from 1955-1962 stand on the fire pan at Keflavik as hulks. 248 had an engine explode on 21.March 1962 during a mission over Iceland, but was able to recover to Keflavik on one engine.
With an AIR-2 Genie missile under the wing. This was a nuclear capable (!) A-A missile and this particular airframe shot the only life firing test of such a missile code named 'operation Plumbob'
