G-THUN, flown here by Stuart Goldspink, has been finished in the colours of a 492nd FS P-47D, operating from Station 347 Ibsley at the time of the Normandy invasion. The 48th FG moved to the bridgehead on 18th June to strip A-4 near Deux-Jumeaux.
Back in UK skies is former TFC Thunderbolt G-THUN / NX47DD, now in the markings of P-47D-40-RA 45-49192 'Nellie', 492 FS, 48 FG as based at RAF Ibsley in Hampshire. G-THUN made her first flight from Sywell on 4 May 2018 in the hands of Pete Kynsey.
Although built too late to serve in the war itself, this P-47 is painted up to represent the mount of a local Seattle-area pilot that did see combat in WWII. Seen landing after participating in the European Theater Free Fly Day.
