Short Takeoff and Landing, Tactical Air-lifter.

The DeHavilland Canada DHC-4 "Caribou", C-7A in USAF service, was designed as a replacement for the Douglas C-47 Dakota/Skytrain. Among the improvements made in the C-7A's design was a rear-loading cargo ramp and high-mounted engines. Cargo management in this configuration made working with the C-7A in austere conditions much easier than with the C-47. Like the C-47, the C-7A is equipped with two engine, a first for DHC.

The DHC-4/C-7A has been retired from military service by all of the air arms that operated the type. In many areas the Caribou was replaced by the larger, America Lockheed C-130. Other customers opted for the European C-295 or CASA CN-235 aircraft. The last military operator of the Caribou was the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), which retired their aircraft in November of 2009.
