Long-range, tactical strike aircraft.
The F-111F is the ultimate version of the F-111 platform developed for the USAF's Tactical Air Command (TAC). The uprated P&W TF30-P-100 turbofans, providing a substantial increase in performance over the previous TF30-P-3 engines. Many of the components from the strategic FB-111A were incorporated into the F-111F's design. Among the items included were the AN/APQ-146 terrain following RADAR. During the 1980's the Pave Tack FLIR and laser designator system was added along with digital displays as part of the Pacer Strike avionics upgrade package.
The F-111F participated in the "El Dorado Canyon" strikes on Libya and in Operation Desert Storm. The USAF retired their fleet of F-111F's in 1996, replacing them with the then McDonnell Douglas F-15E "Strike Eagle".
