Medium to heavy, strategic air-lifter.

The EADS/Airbus A400M is the long-anticipated competitor to the Lockheed-Martin C-130 "Hercules", which has dominated the role for decades. This design also represents the first dedicated military aircraft put forth by the Airbus consortium. Like any multinational project, there are have been long delays in what has become a very protracted development program.

A major strength for the A400M is the modern design and technology. CAD and composite materials have been incorporated into the A400M from the start, and not added later, as time progressed. The A400M is also 50% larger than the C-130 and cruise at speeds 100mph faster than. Refinements in engine technology as along with the Airbus standard glass cockpit make the A400M a true 21st Century aircraft. The USAF issued a formal request for information on the A400M. Airbus responded with a 118 aircraft proposal and with a strong EADS/Airbus lobby in the U.S. Congress, a good chance exists for the A400M to fly in USAF colors.
