Two-seat, all weather interceptor and ground attack aircraft.

The F-4D was the first version of the Phantom, tailored to USAF requirements. The preceeding F-4C being almost identical to U.S. Navy F-4B's. D-model Phantoms could carry the AIM-4 "Falcon" AAM, which proved completely ineffective against enemy fighter aircraft. A RADAR warning receiver (RHAW) to alert the crew of incoming SAMs was added as soon as the aircraft in the S.E. Asian theater of operations. 44 enemy aircraft were claimed by USAF F-4D's over the skies of Vietnam. A total of 761 F-4's of all models were lost in Vietnam, many to SAM and AAA fire.

Subsequent F-4D's were modified for the Wild Weasel role with the APS-107 RADAR and APR-38 avionics system with the AGM-78 anti-radiation missile. The F-4D was the first USAF type to deploy laser guided bombs in combat, having done so in 1968. At the end of it's TAC career, the F-4D helped flight test and deploy the AGM-65 "Maverick" air-to-ground missile. The last F-4D's were withdrawn from USAF service in 1988.

Surplus airframes, in addition to 18 new-build F-4D's, were supplied to the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF). RoKAF F-4D's are in the process of being replaced by the Boeing F-15K "Slam Eagle". Iran ordered 32 F-4D's in 1968. All examples were delivered by the end of 1969. A few of Iran's F-4D's remain in service today, through no small feat by Iranian aerospace industry.
