Just a few days later this Eagle was badly damaged by a bird strike. It was later transported by road to Soesterberg, where a C-5 transported it back to the States. Eventually repaired, now resting at AMARC
Texas ANG from San Antonio, just arrived for BDRT duties. I still remember standing at RAF Mildenhall a week or so earlier seeing about 6 F-4cs taking of from RAF Lakenheath to go to the various USAFE bases for BDRT duties !
This German Air Force F-4F Phantom II - with the fly-out c/s of Hopsten Air Base - is now preserved at Wittmundhafen AFB. The special badge of the white winged horse is just visible on the bottom of the aircraft (digging a hole in the ground to shoot from
