This former US Army Cub was transferred to French ALAT in the mid 1950s. First registered in the UK as G-AYPM on 29 March 1978, it was one of the very few aircraft coming to the 2014 Auster Fly-In at wind-swept Spanhoe.
AOP.6 VF557 saw service with 666 Squadron in the late fifties and in civilian life was converted to the 6A version to meet the growing demand for a tough gliding tug. After Auster's had been absorbed into Beagle, the 6A was known as the Tugmaster.
This Husky was presented to the Air Training Corps at RAF Northolt in June 1969 and had subsequently RAF serial XW635 allocated. Later the Husky served with 5 AEF at Cambridge and the RAFC Flying Club at RAF Cranwell. XW635 is based at Spanhoe.
Auster III NX534 entered service with 658 Squadron in June 1943 and was with 4 Squadron in Normandy in August 1944. NX534 was attached to this unit until the end of the war. In June 1946 the Auster was transferred to the RNethAF.
