A trainer version of the Shackleton as a replacement for the ageing Lancaster MR.3s of the School of Maritime Reconnaissance had been under consideration since 1953 and in 1955 the decision was taken to convert ten MR.1 and MR.1A aircraft to T.4 standard. This version had the mid-upper turret removed and a special ASV Mk.13 Training Installation for one instructor and two student operators fitted.
A trial installation was made in MR.1 VP258 by Hawker Siddeley Aviation at Langar before conversion of the other MR.1A aircraft started.
The following MR.1 and MR.1A aircraft were converted to Shackleton T.4 trainers: VP259, 293, WB818, 819, 820, 822, 826, 831, 832, 837, 844, 845, 847, 849, 858, WG511 and WG527.
In August 1957, the first T.4, WB837, entered service with the Maritime Operational Training Unit (MOTU) at RAF Kinloss.
