In WW2 planes had nicknames like MEMPHIS BELLE. Does the tradition continue? And if so, does anyone know some actual names of planes out there?
Or did it all go out of fashion along with nose art? I would really appreciate any info. Thanks |

To be honest, I haven`t seen any modern military aircraft with a nickname, and /or nose art. But, I can`t tell for planes in other countries. Maybe there are some, I don`t know. I only know for Germany, France, Switzerland and the US.
I do know, that the Swiss have some F/A 18 with tiger paint, as the unit has a tiger in it`s logo. And there are special paints for all a/c participating in the annual NATO Tiger meet. But the last real nose art I know of, was during the Vietnam war the shark grin on some of the F4 Phantoms. F-14 Tomcat 4-ever!:) |

B-2s have names ("Spirit of State XYZ"  but no art.There are a couple of Guard F-16 squadrons (e.g., South Dakota) that *I think* still paint unique nose art and names on their jets, although I haven't seen any in a while to verify this. Photos, anyone? Guard and Reserve A-10 units also used to paint names and art on the inside of the boarding ladder door. Does this practice continue? AMC, AFRC, and Guard tankers and transports are commonly named "Spirit of ABC" (= State, famous person, etc.) or "City of ABCD" after towns near their bases, and some Guard fighter units use similar names. I am the Assistant Crew Chief on F-16AM, 80-3666. It is owned by the Royal Norwegian Air Force and is at Edwards AFB in the 416 Combined Test Force/416FLTS. It has been referred to as Christine while still in Norway. It is here as part of the EPAF testing.

I believe the "Spirit of ..." names have to be approved way high up, maybe even congress.

Seen quite a few A10s with art on the ladder door names etc also all F117 to plus one was called Christine from the film ! any link with the same on that F16 ?
