Hi everyone,

I know the site hasn't had a big update in a long time and it's badly due for some modernization, especially a new responsive design. I've already begun the work, but before I get too far into it, I felt it's better to get some input from all of you, the real users of the site.

I already have it on my list to have a new responsive design and modernize the photo uploader. So, please let me know what else you'd like to see change, what's good and what can use improvement.

Hi Ray,
Regarding the photo uploader I find it comfortable that most of the settings (like location) remain when trying to upload a new photo.
But it would save some time if you could add a field to enter the airport (name, code, whatever) which would make it a big quicker than clicking through the airport submenus.

Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Yes, I know the list can be long sometimes but if you press the first letter of that particular location on your keyboard, the selector will jump to that area. For example, if the city is Fairford, you simply push F on your keyboard, and it will get to you the beginning of the Fs. I'll see about adding a quick Auto-Fill feature, but no guarantees.

Hi Ray,
of course I know that Option, but especially for the US you first have also to select the state before the airfields Pop up...

Another request would be to give the possibility to change data field inputs after the photo has been accepted. Previously this was only possible via the message function and most likely also a lot of work for you. How about enabling such changes that can be checked and released by the crew?
Within this scope you might enable later changes to the watermark as well?

Andreas

Got it. I'll see what I can do.

Also, I'm curious how you guys feel about the dark skin? Should we continue with the dark theme, go light, or a combination of both?

I think the darker colour give a nice contrast / frame when looking at the photos.

I like the dark look too, but modern designs tend to lean towards lighter colors. Maybe I'll do a combo and have dark areas around the images and light everywhere else. We'll see...

It would be great if you enter a serial and press 'search' the system would give a list of all current entries to choose from. This will avoid multiple entries (in version detail) with the same air frame.

Hi Joop,

But, sometimes there are multiple entries. For example, F-14As that were later converted to B or D models. One has to verify the data after the Auto-Fill every time. There's no way around it because the Auto-Fill simply picks the last entry in the database for that particular registration or construction number.

Hi all,

To give you an update, I've been working hard on the site redesign and improvements with a lot more still to go. It's been a lot of work with practically every file getting updated, including all template files. I've also brought onboard a good friend who is an awesome programmer to help out as the amount of work is a lot more than I anticipated.

Besides the mobile-friendly design, here's a list of improvements that will be included as well:

1. New, improved uploader with drag-and-drop capabiltiy
2. Auto-fill for locations
3. Support for 16:9 photos
4. Ability to see EXIF data
5. Ability to edit data on own photos after approval
6. Ability to "suggest" corrections to data on all photos
7. Possibly more items, not sure what else we can cram in, in the first round.

With the acceptance of 16:9 photos, should we continue to accept 4:3 photos? Honestly, I don't like them, too tall in my opinion.

Also, I wanted to ask you guys, the users, what else can we do to make airfighters.com easier to use and a better site overall?

Very interesting improvements Ray. I especially like no.5 and 6.

For the rest of these new options I need to try and see.

And since I always use 3:2 myselve I do not need a 4:3 option. Too tall especially for aircraft.

Looking forward to the changes being implemented.
4:3 seems obsolete imo and could be dropped with options for 16:9 and 3:2 being the standard.

5 & 6 =

Here some suggestions Ray.

As said before I could use a second keyword search menu option.

I now frequently use "your trick" to find my pictures.

And perhaps a way to see where our pictures are in the upload queue before screening (like A.net).

This gives some contemporary transparency and an idea how long its takes for the picture to be screened.

And what about more smilies. The current ones are rather limited and outdated in expressing emotions.

Rgds, Carl.

Please don't take away the paid membership option like airliner.net and jetphotos.com did.

No, that will stay. However, the changes are taking a little longer than predicted as we haven't had that much free time to spend on the updates. Sorry for the delay everyone.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know the new website launch is near. We're cleaning up some final bugs and testing. It might go live as soon as this Sunday. Site might be down for a couple of hours. I will put a message on the site about the outage.

After that, I'm sure there will be bugs that you all will find as nothing beats real-world testing. We got most of the requests and a couple of compromises had to be made to cut down on development time. Overall, the changes will bring about great improvements, especially the responsive design for mobile and tablet devices.

As you have seen the banner at the top by now probably, the new site is launching this Friday night. I'm expecting the outage to last about two hours maybe a little bit more. In that time, if you are able to log in somehow, please do not upload any photos or take any other actions on the site. I will give the all-clear once everything has been worked out. There are a lot of database updates, etc. that needs to happen, so please be patient.

I'm really excited for the change, it will be the biggest update to the website since launch. I hope you like the new airfighters.com!
