The GAMECOCKS of the 19th FS are no more as the last F-15 left Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. A sad time for many other F-15 units/bases across the country as well, since the 390th FS (Mountain Home), 71st FS (Langley), and 95th FS & 2nd FS (Tyndall) have all lost their jets recently.

Sad to hear that. I really like the Eagle. Eagles getting replaced by Raptors, just a sign of the times. I guess the opposite of real life where raptors got replaced by eagles. :-)

It sure is a sad sign of the times Ray. The Eagle is a great aircraft (albeit aging) and the Raptor being capped at 187 airframes isn't going to be able to cover the hole left by the Eagle's departure from the frontline squadrons. Also forgot to mention the 33rd FW down at Eglin gave up their jets as well, so that pretty much leaves PACAF's 18th Wing at Kadena AB, Japan with the only active duty F-15C/D models (44th and 67th FS). You can still see F-15s with several ANG units and at Nellis with the 65th AGRS, and some of the F-15s also recently were sent to Edwards AFB and others to NASA. But a lot went to AMARG.

I think this eeer...financial-political decision? is a big mistake. Falcons are carrying a great stirke capability. One of recent days powerful aircrafts. Engine, electronics, avionics, weapon system, maneuverability.:wink The F-35 is finished, so I think no need Raptor any more.
 F-15 is not worse. The only danger for the US air corps are the upgraded Russian types which serve in South-America or in Asia or the Middle-East and the new Sukhoi T-50. The F-15 can fight successfully with every other type. The government should invest more money to the F-35 project & manufacturing. That will be good idea to operate the Eagles. Eagle is a war veteran with lot of "awards". USAF can trust in the type. And the F-35 is the future, not the Raptor.

Hey what about the 493rd FS from RAF Lakenheath?
So how many active F-15C Squadrons remain ? EDIT: I got a link to good old Wikipedia  F-15 Operators It's down to 3 active Duty squadrons: 493rd, 44th and 67th. |

it won't be long until 493rd looses their planes as well... Next year the squadron will be disbanded. Regards, |

The F-22 is a solid aircraft with the performance that is twice that of the F-15. Now do not get me wrong i have always thought the F-15 is a great aircraft that was designed in the seventies, and like all aircraft they have reached there air frame limits. Now whether the US Congress will go mid-life upgrades on the air frames is another issue right now. As for the F-35 is NOT dead and the flight testing of the F-35C is on track and is showing promises for the Armed Forces of the US, moreover the overseas contracts are still in the active phase and show no sign of any country trying to back out of there commitments on the purchase of these aircraft.
The main reason for the F-22 reaching the numbers it has currently in service is the production cost. Almost along the same lines as the F-35, BUT there is a difference in the 2 aircraft productions and that is the F-35 has overseas customers who want the aircraft for there Armed Forces and that is the critical differences between these aircraft. This isn't a good move. The F-22 cant replace the Eagle. There is only 187. That is for all mission including training and airshow displays. This leaves a lot of the air to air job with the Falcons until the F-35 comes into service. This is a big step back in capability in a hostile world. The Eagles should get the support until the F-35's are available. The aircrew put their butts on the line. They shouldn't be put in such a vulnerable position.

The capabilities of the F-22 and the F-15 are different mainly because they 30 years apart in technology. The F-16 is still a very capable aircraft and should NOT be down played as a second line fighter. The one advantage the F-22 has over the F-15 is it's very low radar cross section, which in the dog fight arena is key to winning the battle. Moreover the Air Force will and does deploy other aircraft to that AOR, i.e., the F-15 Strike Eagle which is very capable, which seem's to have slipped every one minds.
Moreover the current defense budget just passed does not include any upgrades for the F-15C. I for one do not see the dis-advantage in the deployment of the F-22, fly off's between the 2 aircraft have showed something different in which aircraft is superior. Regards |

The F-15C is a very capable aircraft, but like mentioned above, it's over 30 years old. The F-22 is, and is expected to be, better in every regard, just by it's age difference alone as technology has progressed greatly since the Eagle's initial design. The only problem with the F-22 is that there's not enough of them. :wink
