Boeing P-8I Selected as Indian Navy's Long-Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 06, 2009

The Government of India has selected The Boeing Company to provide eight P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft to the Indian navy.
The P-8I is a variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing is developing for the U.S. Navy.
India is the first international customer for the P-8.
Boeing will deliver the first P-8I within 48 months of the contract signing, and the remaining seven by 2015.
"The men and women of The Boeing Company are pleased that India has selected the P-8I," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems(IDS).
"This aircraft will provide outstanding capabilities tailored to India's unique maritime-patrol requirements."
The P-8I is a true multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft(MPA) that features greater flexibility and a broader range of capabilities than MPAs currently in service. The P-8I can operate effectively over land or water while performing anti-submarine warfare missions; search and rescue; maritime interdiction; and long-range intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance.
The P-8I provides India with speed, reliability, persistence and room for growth to satisfy the country's requirements now and well into the future.
The aircraft features an open system architecture, advanced sensor and display technologies, and a worldwide base of suppliers, parts and support equipment.
"Throughout the negotiations, both sides worked diligently to give India the most advanced anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare aircraft in the world today," said Vivek Lall, Boeing IDS vice president and India country head. "The result of these efforts will bring the Indian navy advanced technology that is unmatched in maritime reconnaissance aircraft, and the reach and capability it needs to defend India's vast coastline and maritime waters."

This is recent news? I was just reading up on the a/c a few days ago for no apparent reason and i saw that operators included the Indian Navy.

One thing I'm a little unsure of is. How will a turbo fan perform in the ASW and Maritime Patrol role? How efficent will an aircraft designed for flying at 30,000 ft be at flying low over the water? P-3's can do that efficently, can this aircraft do the same thing?

That's the big question Mario. Presumably they think it can. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I also think the Lockheed proposal was better for the task at hand.

Yeah, I'd like to see the P-8 shut down 2 engines and loiter over the water for an extended period of time :O_o ::grinning}

Yeah I've also seen Auroras or Orions do 14 hour sorties. Doubt this can do that either, despite having 3 extra fuel tanks.

Good News

I will suppose that this acft will be in inventory in the future in Italian Air Force / Italian Navy ASW/ASV force.

Now no money for it; we will see the ATR72Mp as an interim replacement of BR1150 Atlantic 1 and then
P8.......?

Italy usually follows in the footsteps of the US, so i wouldnt be surprised if in a few years the P-8 is seen flying for the Italian Navy as well. When is this aircraft supposed to do it's maiden flight, according to Wikipedia is 2009 but is Boeing ready for that this year?

New Delhi

India has signed a 2.1-billion-dollar contract with United States aerospace major Boeing for eight maritime aircraft, news reports said Monday.
The aircraft are expected to strengthen the Indian Navy’s intelligence-gathering capacities.
It is India’s largest defence purchase from the US and comes a little over a month after a terrorist attack on financial hub Mumbai. Indian investigators claim the terrorists took a sea route from neighbouring Pakistan.
The contract for eight Boeing P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft was signed by an Indian Defence Ministry official and Boeing’s country head Vivek Lall in New Delhi, the PTI news agency reported citing navy and industry sources.
The deal was in the form of a direct commercial contract and some details, such as an end-user verification agreement between India and the US, were pending, the sources were quoted as saying.
The Indian Navy would get its first aircraft under the deal by 2012-13. The remaining aircraft would be delivered in phases by 2015-16, the sources said.
The contract also provides for the purchase of eight more of the P-8I aircraft. The P-8I are intended to replace the navy’s ageing fleet of eight Russian-made Tupolev-142M turboprops.
The P-8I is armed with torpedoes, depth bombs and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. It is capable of anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare.
The aircraft has an operating range of over 600 nautical miles and is expected to help plug gaps in the Indian Navy’s maritime reconnaissance capabilities.(DPA)
