Dual-seat, all weather, day/night interceptor.

The McDonnell Douglas F-4F "Phantom II"is a tailored version of the F-4E for the German Luftwaffe. Germany selected the F-4 to replace the Lockheed F-104G "Starfighter" in Luftwaffe service. McDonnell Douglas removed a single aft fuel tank, AIM-7 capability and air-to-ground munitions in the process of creating the F-4F. As a result, Germany received an interceptor. Later on in it's Luftwaffe career, the F-4F received air-to-ground capability.

In the late 1990's, Germany embarked on a modernization program called "ICE" (Improved Combat Efficiency) to upgrade 110 F-4F's. ICE included the APG-65 RADAR, AIM-120 AMRAAM capability, and a Mil Std 1553R digital data bus. For a brief period, the F-4F operated alongside it's former cold-war rival, the Mig-29, with JG73. The last unit to operate the F-4F in Germany is JG71, which will replace it's Phantoms with the Eurofighter Typhoon in 2012. A good chance exists for some of Germany's F-4F's to continue flying with Greece. The Hellenic Air Force upgraded 38 of their F-4E/G's to the similar ICE standard and might take on additional, ex-Luftwaffe machines.
