Charlie Company 1-140th "Cougars" aircraft sits out in the "golden hour" waiting to assist with initial attack should any fires break out in Central Washington.
A very unusual (but welcome!) visitor to Bowers Field. This Wolfhound, based at Canon AFB in New Mexico, stopped by for a quick re-fuel, and then took off for parts unknown.
Another Tarhe gets a lease on life as an S-64E Skycrane. This example is owned by Siller Helicopters and was in town for almost two weeks on fire patrol.
Formerly US Army UH-1D 65-12871, this UH-1 was stripped down and re-built in 1995 by Northwest Helicopters of Olympia, WA. Seen here fighting the Snag Canyon Fire burning North of Ellensburg, WA.
Formerly US Army UH-1D 65-12871, this UH-1 was stripped down and re-built in 1995 by Northwest Helicopters of Olympia, WA and now contacts out with the USFS for wildfire duties.
Due to the overload of fire assets needed this summer in Washington, help was called in from out of state. This Medevac is from the New Mexico National Guard and is on stand-by for the Snag Canyon Fire burning North of town.
This UH-60A from the Arizona National Guard (just transferred from Tennessee) touches down on an asphalt strip surrounded by dead grass, making for quite a hailstorm of debris around it.
This Medevac is pulling double-duty as it gets ready to take to the air with a 660-gallon "Bambi Bucket" in preparation to attack the Snag Canyon Fire actively burning 12 miles North of Ellensburg.
Almost exactly two years since it was here to work on the Taylor Bridge Fire, 430 is back in Ellensburg on fire fighting duty. You can see the Snag Canyon Fire burning about 12 miles out of town in the background.
Formerly US Army CH-54B Tarhe 68-18459, this S-64E now has a new lease on life as an Erickson Skycrane affectionately known as "Malcolm". He stopped by for fuel on the way North to Leavenworth, WA.
Starting out life as a Sikorsky CH-54B Tarhe, this Skycrane has been re-built by Erickson Sky Crane and is now used to fight wildfires. It is seen here carrying a 2,650 US gallon water tank with a siphon filler tube.
The first snow of the season sits on the hills as this DNR Huey basks in the early-morning autumn sun. This is the earliest it has snowed in the Kittitas Valley in close to 50 years.
One of three DNR Hueys based in Ellensburg. Despite the record-early snowfall, fire danger in the Kittitas Valley is still moderate, so I expect them to stick around for another month or so before departing for their "winter home" in Olympia.
Up from Redding, CA, this ex-US Army Cobra is in Ellensburg to provide FLIR support while looking for hot spots from the Table Mountain Fire burning North of Ellensburg.
Mission Accomplished! After fighting the Taylor Bridge wildfire non-stop for a week, the National Guard crews are cleared to go home to JBLM, still sporting their "mission markings".
