PA474's starboard side represents 50 Squadron LL922 'T' as flown by F/O Douglas Millikin, DFC, grandfather of current OC BBMF Andy Millikin. On return to Coningsby the No.4 Merlin (starboard outer) had to be shut down and the propeller feathered.
PA474 represents Lancaster B.I DV385/KC-A "Thumper III" in service with 617 Squadron from November 1943, at Coningsby and later Woodhall Spa. In the autumn of '44 DV385 (coded 'KC-V') took part in the raids against the Tirpitz. DV385 was scrapped in 1946.
Each of those grey fighters in the background can deliver more weapon load farther and more precise than this big bomber of World War II - and with only one crew contrary to the Lancaster's Seven ! Open Dagen 2008
