PR.XI PL983 in her 1945 4 Squadron PR-blue colours. Note the one-piece windscreen and the name of Lettice Curtis, former Air Transport Auxiliary pilot, who broke the 100 km closed-circuit speed record of 313.208 mph in PL983 on 28 August 1948.

Owned by the Netherlands AF between 1945 and 1960, after that owned by a Dutch museum until 1987. Brought to the UK that year for rebuild to flying condition.

This plane was built in 1944 and delivered to the RAF. Between 1947 and 1952 it served as an instructional airframe for the RNlAF. Afterwards it was moved to a museum where it was kept for 26 years. In 1987 restoration began with the first flight in 2002.

During 1944/45 16 sqn based at Melsbroek (B) repainted some of their recce Spitfires pink as this proved to be a better camouflage for low and medium altitude in the hazy European skies
