Dedicated naval and shore-based attack aircraft.
The S.2B version of the Buccaneer was built for the RAF by Hawker-Siddley and modified from existing S.2A stock. The MoD's cancellation of the TSR-2 and the retirement of the Fleet Air Arm's carriers placed the Buccaneer in RAF service during 1969. RAF S.2B's could be armed with Martel air-to-surface missiles and carried bulged fuel tank in the modified bomb-bay. The RAF Buccaneer fleet served in the 1991 Gulf War, providing laser designation capability for Jaguar and Tornado aircraft. The last S.2B's were withdrawn from RAF service in 1994.
