Alex's Tomcat shot the other day reminded me of the colorful Navy jets of the 70's and 80's we all miss so much. Also, that particular VF-142 scheme was the boxart of the Monogram 1/48th scale kit which was the first military jet I ever built, a long time ago... So, this leads me to the question, what is your favorite Tomcat scheme? For me it's the VF-84 Jolly Rogers early scheme as seen here:

I have to admit, the VF-2 Bounty Hunters scheme was a close second.

What's yours?

That would have to be this VX-4 Tomcat!

Though I am a fan of VF-1's hi-viz paint too.

Oh yah, that's a nice one too. Wolfpack's gray and white scheme with the original beaver tail.

Mr. Munzel has shared this beauty with us which I think definitely ranks up there with the best Tomcat schemes.

No, no, no. (But thanks for the plug, Jonathan.) Any jet with a radar that big needs a black radome. While VF-31's markings looked good, IMHO the best "pencil jets" were VF-41's in the last 1970s. Anybody got photos of that?

For me, it's the CO bird of VF-31 "Tomcatters" with the CAG bird coming second, both nicely captured in this one by Joris. a Tomcat must have a black nose.
