Hi all
Could you please advise me how best to use the Neat Image software, and what settings to start with. I will also be using it to enhance my colour prints and slides as most of my collection are in this format. Also how best to enhance prints to get acceptable results that can be uploaded here. For example what dpi should I set my scanner to. Iam using Picasa 3 software for enhancing . Many thanks Best wishes Charlie |

Hy Charly,
you can start very easy with the automatic settings. For most of the cases this will work very fine. And about dpi, lieuwehofstra had given you already an good advise here :wink Muuuuhhh - welcome in the land of milk and chocolate |

Hi many thanks for your help one more question Iam using ACDSee software for my enhancing, its on a 30 day free trial,I would really like ADOBE Lightroom, but its rather expensive should I persevere with ACDSee, or save for the ADOBE product,do the extra features warrant getting it.

I would recommend saving up for Lightromm, but I haven't used ACDSee for many many years so I am not sure what it is capable of. Having said that I use both Lightroom and Photoshop to edit all my pictures and together they certainly aren't cheap.

I know Nikon makes really good slide scanners with true white lights that just can't be beat, but they are not cheap, probably looking at several hundred dollars. Perhaps you can find a used one on eBay or some place, or buy one, scan your slides and then sell it to get some of the investment back. Of course, there are professional labs that will scan all your slides for you at 3000-5000dpi for just a few cents each. If you only have a few hundred slides, that may be the way to go.

Charlie, have a look a Photoshop Elements if you can't justify the price of Lightroom. You loose the organizing and keywording functionalities, but you get most of full-on Photoshop's editing capability at a reasonable price.
As for scanners, I agree with Ray that a used Nikon or Minolta may be your best bet. They definitely hold their value, so take care of whichever one you pick up and you can probably get your money back once you're done. HTH, -M.M. |
