Hi,
I had a question for the screeners and the more experienced photographers out there. Is 16:9 an acceptable aspect ratio for aviation photography or not? I have a broad side shot of one of my helos which is not very level and will not fit in the usual 3:2 that I go for. Also wanted to mention that after a long break from photography and the site I'm back for the summer months, and looking forward to contribute more to the site. Cheers Mario |

16:9 (or 4:3) is a widely accepted aspect ratio.
If your picture is not level, you probable get some 'corners' after leveling. After cropping the aircraft up to its 16:3 ratio you may have these corners still visible. You may try to correct this by marking the sky (or flight line, where-ever these corners are) and try the option 'transform'. By stretching or warping the selection you will be able to correct the corners. If you are not quite sure, you may upload the picture as it is (in resolution 2000+). We can give it a try than and come up with a solution. |

Hi,
16:9 and 4:3 are not the same thing. 4:3 and 16:12 are the same ratio. 4:3 is more square looking while 16:9 is your standard wide screen aspect ratio. I've never seen 16:9 be used in anything other than HD video that's why I asked. Examples

Ah, I see. I'm quite mistaken with the two I mentioned an mixed up as well. Sorry for the confusion caused...
You are quite right: 6:4 is the common standard on Airfighters. If the picture above is the helo concerned, than there is no problem rotating it to level position and crop it to 6:4 afterwards. Both the wheels and the rotor head fit into this aspect ratio. |

The picture above is just an example I used for the two different aspect ratios. The second one being the questionable one as far as aviation photos go.
The helo concerned is this following one, as you can see it needs quite a bit of CW rotation and by doing so and cropping at 3:2 or 4:3 you end up cutting major parts of the aircraft. The "wide screen" crop would be the only one that saves it but again I'm uncertain about its acceptance.

No, unfortunately it would not be acceptable. Currently we only accept 3:2 to 4:3. Anything between those two ratios is fine.

If you apply the tricks described above you can achieve the correct aspect ratio with your picture.
I took the liberty to alter your picture a bit to a 6:4 ratio.

Now the site has been modernized, thumbnails are presented in 16:9 HD TV aspect ratio. I like 16:9 so I tried to upload a 1280 x 720 pixel ( = 16:9) slide scan but I got the old familiar aspect ratio not allowed message. Will the old 3:2 / 4:3 rule stay in place or can 16:9 be added?

We allow everything from 16:9 to 3:2 now. It's just that the error messages have not been updated. They will be fixed.
