I think photos getting rejected for "clutter" and referring to people in the background is ridiculous. If it is an air show photo, of course there are likely to be some people in the background, but it does not take away from the quality of the photo...

I'm sure you will find many people to disagree with that. The subject has to be the aircraft, not some people standing behind it. We're already very lenient on this matter.

Too lenient in my view ... I very much dislike airshow pics where lots of civilians are behind (or even worse - in front of) the object. Even so much that I do not to take the picture if there are none related civilians in it.

Well look away from the screen now then

Personally I have no problem with any of these, in fact I love the VC-10 photo, it is a bit quirky and different. However I suspect that it would fail the "clutter" rule so good thing I posted it a while ago. One thing that I try to do is make the people part of the photo story, in the case of the VC-10 and the Tornado I have referred to the people in the photographer comments.

I can empathise with pdxvip's frustration on this, at the same time Soudbarrier has a valid point too. All I would say is I am so thankful that I happily took the best photos that I could back in the 80's, people or no people, fences or no fences, clutter and all because if I had been so fussy back then I would not have half the photos of Phantoms, Blackbirds and other long gone goodies which I treasure so much 27 years later. For me it is the plane that comes first and will always be so, photography comes second.

Hi
Just read the above, I agree and disagree, it all depends on the subject and the situation.

If the shot is rare then that is different such as the Mirage, this wont be seen again, this should be taken into account, other shots that are common should be considered on merit, and not discounted due to x or y reason. One of the main problems with our hobby is that we all like shots in different way, however we all have to conform to certain standards when we post on here, my biggest problem is the shot being level, when I was learn photography in the 1970's and 80's I was always told subject level and the back ground is not important whilst on here it has to be background level and subject doesnt have to level.

Howvere I think a shot should be judged as an over all and not discount due to people in the back ground as long as they dont distract from the the image, but this is again subjective.

all the best
