Hi all,

I was thinking a while if I should bring this topic up and finally decided to do so (for the sake of AF's quality claims)

First of all let me explain the reason for this question here: I recently had a rejection of an aircraft which was standing half in the shadow. It was a stored one and the first shot from that side - but I can live with it not having it in the database.

But recently I see here and there photos showing up with large parts of the airplane cut off.
Parts of propellers missing, tails clipped, and so on... In my opinion this is neither fish nor fowl...
I do get the point if the photo shows some kind of special marking or can be judged as 'artistic', but what about half fuselages and so on? [Usually these aircraft would fall out of the sky ]

Continuing this I might try to cut of the shadow part of my previous mentioned photo and upload it again to circumvent the previous rejection which I will not do btw...

What's your point-of-view on this subject, and maybe even more important, what's the opinion of the screeners??

Best regards

Andreas

Hi Andreas

As a photographer, you should know the claim: "less is more"....
Sometimes it is much more interesting to show only a part of the aircraft, especially when it is an action-shot. I know that the most pictures are some sideview full body pictures, in my eyes not really spectacular. This doesn't mean, that I don't take such pictures myself. Sometimes it is the only way to take a picture of the shown aircraft :wink

But we have some examples for "half-planes":
In my eyes, the pictures are just reduced to the most important part. It makes the pictures more dynamics, it gives some life!!

As we can see, even you cut off some parts of the wings :wink

I go with Andreas here. I see no reason why there is only half of the aircraft on the photo. The example which is posted showing the Greek Rhino is definitely something different than the middle section of an Swiss F-5 landing. Sorry Martin but this is my personal opinion.

Jörg

Well Jörg
First of all thanks for your statement, and second I'm Martin not Sven :wink

Yes the Rhino is only a little cutted at the wingtips. But tell me, what is bad about showing only the important things?
I only take full body pictures, when there is no other chance to get a picture from the aircraft (or it doesn't makes any sense). The very big difference if you like cutted aircraft or not is maybe your past! If someone has started as a real spotter, then he (she) will prefer full body pictures where you can read without any problems the registration.
For people like me it's more a challenge to get dynamic and lifefull pictures. This is because we have ever be photographers, we were never hunting for registrations. Of course we need the regs to upload pictures at Airfighters, but it is not the most important thing for us!
I have many pictures at home, were I can't read the regs.........

Martin

Sometimes an up-close nose or tail shot is ok, but generally I don't like them. For me there has to be a really good reason to have the tail cut off, or to even have half the tail cut off. Otherwise, I consider it a poor crop. Of course, we have to take into account how rare the photo or aircraft is, what's the circumstance, etc. For example, I rejected these two photos for poor cropping:

He turns around and immediately reuploads the same shots only to be approved by another screener who is more lenient than me. To me that's just foul, and still a poor crop of a plane that we have close to 300 photos in the DB. Was I wrong?

You were right Ray, , IMHO only in exceptional circumstances those photo's should be accepted

Is it really a clarification Andreas??
If so, is this now a new rejection reason? And if, what happen to all the pictures allready approved??
There are lots of pictures with parts cut off (wings, tails, nose, etc.).....

And we have many great pictures from you with cutted parts…..
So, where is the clarification now? Are all of your pictures with cutted parts made under special circumstances?

I only try to understand, where your problem is........
What is the difference between big and small parts cut off. Cut is cut, isn't it?

Not in this case. A cut is not a cut, it depends on where it's cut. Look at the examples I posted above. Definitely cut at the wrong place.

Andreas, you really have no reason to ask here, personally I really like all your close-up photos and I very much trust your eye or view on this. Please, if it looks right to you then just submit to here. *You* are the expert regards your photos, not the screener, not even the owner. Airfighters needs you, not the other way round.

And look on the upside, you have not yet had a reply from our 'top uploader' suggesting that you find another database to upload to!

:wink

To me there is no problem in "chopping" parts off, if it is done in the right place and context. I have no issues at all with Andreas' images above.

I do have to agree with Ray that the two examples he posted are not good crops, the symmetry of the image is off and it just looks like the lens was too big for the situation and the images uploaded as shot. If not then I would seriously consider re-editing them and choosing a different crop point.
