hi
i would like to know what would be the best camera to use for Avation photography. i have been told by many people that the best buy for my slfe would be for the EOS 400D withthe 18-55mm lens and the 75-300mm lens. im open to all opinion. Thanks |

I think there is no standard set to use for Aviation photography.
You will soon reach the limit with 300mm. I think its better to use 400mm or 500mm but that´s just my opinion. Most of the photographer use Canon or Nikon. I still use a Konica Minolta D7D and wait for the Sony alpha 200. My lenses are 18-125mm and the 50-500mm from Sigma. The Equipment you have should work fine for the beginning and you can upgrade later if you want to. Regards, |

I`ve got the Canon EOS 350D, with the Standard lens 18-55, and the 55-200. 200 isn`t enough, so I`ll buy the 100-400 L IS lens soon. I think, you`ll do fine with this set you`re going to buy.
You can upgrade to nearly every other Canon lens you like. F-14 Tomcat 4-ever!:) |

Hi,
I have a Nikon D40, with the standard lens & I love it. The D40 is an entry-level SLR that won't break the bank. Ever watch CSI?. Nick, Sarah, & Warrick use the D40/D50 to snap photos of the crime scenes. /N |

I'm using the 400D with the Sigma 50-500. That seems to be doing the trick. I've also got the Sigma 70-300 for when 500mm is not needed or my arms start aching

Thanks for all the help onece again i have now had the camera for about 2 weeks now and are enjoying it on the sunny gold coast right now still learning how to use it but seems simple enough. i still haven't been able to go to any airshow yet but looking forward to the RAAF airshow in adelaide on the 25 -27 of october. thanks once again i think that this has been the best camera.

The dinosaur is finally going digital. I haven't decided between the cannon 60d and 7d or Sony a 850 or 900. How big of an advantage do I have going with a full frame sensor? I would be pleases to see your responses. Thanks, Troy |

This old photographer who is about to reach his 45th year of photography, says go with Canon, the 5D MkII or 7D. Make sure you get a 100-400 Image Stabilized L Lens and you'll be set. If not Canon, then go with Nikon. But having shot with only Canons since 1970, I'd never use anything else. They both have their advantages but when it comes to ruggedness and dependability, it's Canon for me.

I'm taking photos with SLR-camers sins 1981, pretty a long time :wink
My first cameras were Minolta XG1, then Minolta Dynax 7000 and then 9000. I was quite happy with this but for me all the buying of filmmaterial and the cost for developement made me stopping a little bit with photography  Then in 2003 I bought the nikon D100. The reason for buying nikon is very simple. At that time i had a friend with the same camera and underwater housing for the camera. My wife and I went for dive holiday and the friend sayed that I could take his housing when i would by the d100. You see, it was just a coincidence that I bought nikon. But i'm very happy, that i made this desicion. Actually I have the Nikon D300 with the Nikkor 200-400 VR 4.0 for aviation photography. Most of the time I use this lens together with teleconverter 1.4x, sometimes 1.7x. For me this equipement is just perfect, because it is a great zoomlens, not a fixlens! This zoomlens gives me more flexibility. As backup camera I use a Nikon D90 with Nikkor 70-200mm VR 2.8. If I would have to decide again, it would be nikon, no question. But as I sayed. It was just a coincidence that i bought nikon 7 years ago...... I wish back the good old times, when a picture was a picture and not only bits and bytes and when the people knew the meaning of the word respect. Respect is a very rare thing in our days… |

I would say it's not just about the camera but the whole system. Do you have friends who you can borrow lenses from? Do Canon or Nikon make a lens that you would like that the other doesn't? Being in Nebraska I guess there isn't a service center within driving distance so that doesn't play a role.
I think for someone starting fresh either manufacturer offers good cameras and lenses in most (if not all) price ranges. You tend to see more Canon shooters at airshows but the number of Nikons seems to be increasing (in my opinion). I have a Canon 40D but that was because my film camera was a Canon and I could keep using the lenses. As for full frame vs crop factor, I would say if you only shoot aviation then go with the crop factor, if you shoot portraits or landscapes as well then the decision is tougher. Anyway there's my 2 cents. |

Thanks for the thoughts. A lot of things to debate. Doing the research I'm leaning towards the cannon. There is a cannon workshop in Denver in a couple months. I will probably go to that. I do a lot of varied projects. Airshows are one part. I do a lot of 19th cent. living history. I also want to do some low and existing light work. I want to make it back to Euroupe in a couple years. Lot of things to think about. Not going shopping soon. Two days ago I fell on some ice. I have a compound fracture in my right leg. It will be a while before I get back to work. Thanks for all the comments. Thanks ironfan, the leg is getting better. I got wheeled to a shop yesterday and got to play. It will either be a cannon 7d or a cannon 5d markII. Both have pro and cons. I wish the budget allowed for both. Either choice will be a good one.
