Why is this question, --> Gee, what happened to the photo ratings?, linked to all the photos? I find it very annoying.

LOL. Ok, it's been removed. The new system should be in place very soon.

Hi all,
The new system is in place. It's quite simple, you like a photo, give it a thumbs up. Also, if you gave a photo high marks with the old system, it may display a Thumbs Up already.

Hi Ray

Will there be also a thumbs down option in the future? Now it’s only good or bad, not a real rating!!
Before we could really rate from poor to excellent what is in my eyes a rating.
Now we have the same sh…. as it is in facebook: like or don’t like. This has nothing to do with rating! Life isn’t only black or white, there are different greys in between.
I know, that no one wants low ratings, but I also get low, even poor ratings. Sometimes I get low ratings when I thought the picture is good, and sometimes I get excellent ratings when I thought, the picture is „only“ good. But that’s real rating (real life), not only kids playing. After a wile, when other rated the same picture, the average rating for the bad rated picture rised up!

My opinion. Maybe I’m the only one with this opinion, but I hope, that there are also some people that think the same way….

I wish back the good old times, when a picture was a picture and not only bits and bytes and when the people knew the meaning of the word respect. Respect is a very rare thing in our days…

You're right Martin, but unfortunately the system was getting abused. People were giving poor ratings not based on the photo's merits, but rather because they didn't like the photographer or were jealous of a really great photo. A lot of effort went into creating a great rating system, but unfortunately because of a few immature people we had to get rid of it. I'm really disappointed.

Now, you can give a photo a thumbs up, or nothing at all. Since we only accept good photos, we don't need a thumbs down.

I think that poor ratings not based on the photo\'s merits can be avoid simply by adding names with rating stars. Of course there are not bad photos at all, but some are better than another - De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum ("In matters of taste and colors there is no dispute."

The question is: what is the photos merit??
Everyone is looking different to this, I'm sure about this! Some people love static pictures, other love air to air, other want onboard picture, other love sideview landing and takeoff photos and others love action-photos. So where is the photos-merit?
Maybe there are pictures that you say wow and I (or someone else) would say "nice". You understand what I mean?

I think there is no system, that will give all the photos the merit, that they deserve. The old system was in my eyes better, than the new one. You could give ratings from 1 to 5 and now you only can give good or bad. I'm sure, that many good photos don't get any rating because of this. If you are honest you can only give a thumbs up, when the photo is at least excellent compared to the old system. Every thing that is below, doesn't deserve a thumbs up. With the old system you could give for example 3 stars, because the photo is quite good but not excellent.

Me myself had bad ratings as well. I see it now with the new system. As Ray said, the thumbs will appear, when you had good ratings made with the old system. I have actually photos, that I know, that they had more stars than the have thumbs now! So there must have been bad ratings, the same problem as Jan Eenling had. So you can see, that we all had the same problems with the old ratings system.....
But we will have "problems" with the new system as well, I'm sure about it!!

I wish back the good old times, when a picture was a picture and not only bits and bytes and when the people knew the meaning of the word respect. Respect is a very rare thing in our days…

I think if all these ratings would not influence the position in the "Member Favourites", than there would not be the need for such a discussion :O_o

Furthermore I don't get the idea why not giving or getting a 'thumbs up' means tht a photo is not good, or even bad...?
If you do not like a photo now there is no need to click it and give it a low rating as you can only skip it ::2thumbs_grin}
Furthermore this new setting obviously avoids the abuse that Ray mentioned as some people obviously voted up their own photos, which I think is just fair!

And as always: time will tell... (if this new set-up is good or not)

Regards

Andreas

You guys are taking this way too seriously. The new system is not going to change and as Andreas mentioned, if it wasn't for the position of the photos in that section, it wouldn't be such a big deal. Please remember, we are a photo database and NOT A PHOTO RATING SITE!

Well I'm not really agree with Andreas, but I'm absolutely agree with you Ray. Airfighters is a great database, why do we need any rating system?
Without there would not be any need for discussions like this.....

I don't want to stress you longer with my words, so these are my last words to this "problem". I will live with it, like we all will. There are more important things in life, than this discussion.
