Just a comment, is there any way in which the 'New Photos' feature on the Airfighters home page could be made more random?

The reason for asking is that currently the 'New Photos' feature only shows the last 16 photos added to the database on the home page. If the photo screener is screening a larger number of photos then only the last 16 photos screened will show on the home page and if, like myself, photographers tend to upload photos in bulk then it is quite possible that the work of only one or two photographers will be visible on the front page.

Would it be possible to turn this into a 'Random New Photo' feature for, say, photos added the last 12 hours? This would give all contributing photographers somewhat more equal coverage.

Just commenting, not throwing my toys out of the pram :wink

Hi Michael,
That is true, unfortunately not all photos will get equal time on the home page if several dozen photos are approved in a relatively short amount of time. We try not to approve more than a half dozen or so photos from the same photographer in succession to avoid that very issue you are mentioning. It is not a perfect system but randomizing it would not be a perfect system either. I'll see if it can be improved in any way, maybe a throttling system or something like that to give all photos approved equal time on the home page.

One feature put in, which I probably forgot to announce, was the ability to see all photos approved since the last time you logged into the site. The link is right under the New Photos section on the home page, at the far right. I hope that helps.

What if a few more rows of new photos could be displayed for those who wanted to see them by clicking a "show" button, as with the Top of Past 24 Hours images? It seems to me that would make folks like Michael and Carl happy without requiring the home page's current appearance to be changed.

Just a suggestion, made without knowledge how practical it might be....

Hi Gents,
Like I said, there is no perfect system, but I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I will explore all options and come up with a solution as soon as I can.

Soundbarrier :I also noticed the unequal additional attention some pics get.

That's right, however this not due to the "New Photos" feature, but I think mainly to other 'methods' being applied (just check the website referers on some of the photos...).

Linking from other sites or forums is quite acceptable though.

I recently had a 'Top Photo of the Day' with an old F-14A shoto which I took at Oceana back in 1988, it wasn't even remotely a good photo either! Reason it got there was because there was a debate on a well known modelling forum regards the correct paint scheme and that was enough to propel it to the top of the heap

Why are you talking like this Andreas. It looks, like only all the other do so, but this isn't true!
You're linking very often in Forums as well, like lot's of us do. So please stay fair. Maybe you should check your website referers??

@ Soundbarrier:
I exactly know what you mean. It is also the point, that some kind of pictures "goes better". The normal side-shot is very popular and maybe some very spectacular actionshots as well. But "normal" flying-pictures from "non prominent" photographers sometimes don't get the attention they deserve (my opinion).

I wish back the good old times, when a picture was a picture and not only bits and bytes and when the people knew the meaning of the word respect. Respect is a very rare thing in our days…
