Can someone answer this question? Why is there only one sidewinder missle loaded on one wing-tip when the aircraft is on a sortie? I've seen this on many current photo's of Navy Super Hornets either launching or landing on their carriers.

Because one is all they need. They are not expecting to counter any air-to-air threats so one is just there as a back up. I think weapons have a service life as well, so it's not good to carry them and put hours on them unless you feel you might need them.

True... all weapons have a self life and they go down as the weapon pulls g's... The more g's a missle pulls through its life the more unreliable it becomes.
But if i were flying in hostial sky's i would at least carry two sidewinders or AMRAM. |

I wouldn't know if just one Winder is standard on the Super Bug. What I do know is that the plane itself is not that impressive to me. But hey, who am I, certainly not a pilot...

In a wargame such as the Redflag, all aircrafts need a equipment on one wingtip to send message such as whether it's shot down by an enemy fighter ,by cannon or missile, to the base or the AWACS(E-3) so on the other side of the wing they just need a real thing to balance the aircraft, although the Sidewinder is never meant to be launched

eurofighter is right... in Redflag and other practice war missions only one fake sidewinder is used. It has a laser designator on it and when the pilot fires his missles it tracks the target in front of him and causes an alarm to sound in the killed jet. The hit is then recorded and after the mach. war game the instructors and generals sit the pilots down and evaluate their tactics.

I read somewere that is standar for us navy to carry an AA misil when flaing out the US and far from a combat zone, is not usual to flay in this way inside the US borders or in a combat zone sach the north arab golf where the carry two AIM-9 and unless one AIM-120.

Peter, just refresh the page and the images will appear. I don't know what the problem is with older versions of Explorer. It works fine in IE 7 and Firefox. Some kind of JavaScript incompatibility. I used to have that problem, so I just upgraded to IE 7. For testing purposes only, of course. Otherwise, I always use Firefox.
