Have been thinking for a while of writing an aviation article to post on Airfighters, most likely something based upon photos from the mid to late 80's. Just a couple of questions:
1) If I use another Airfighters member's photos in the article should I obtain their permission first? My personal opinion is that I should as good etiquette. 2) Can I link to photos stored in a web based account like Fotopic? 3) If I have a photo on one of the competitors sites (won't say who :wink ) which has been rejected here can I link to that photo? 4) Are there any limits to subject matter? For example a 'then and now' at a closed air base including photos of some buildings as well as aircraft? A museum visit perhaps? A particular type of aircraft in AMARG? Just ideas at this stage... Hi Michael,
Great, we're always looking for good articles to add to the site. To answer your questions: 1) My answer would have to no, simply because the photo is being used on a different part of the site. For ex. we can always link to it in Forum posts, and you wouldn't ask for permission in that case, and I'm sure the photog's would like the extra hits it will produce. If the article ends up on another site in the future, then permission would have to be attained. Anywhere on the airfighters site is ok, and you can use the auto-insert feature to insert the thumbnail into the article. 2) I'd rather not. Simply because the other site may at times be un-responsive, or 2) the owner may take that photo down in the future without realizing that it is being used in an article at airfighters.com. In that case, simply e-mail the photos to me and I will insert them. 3) A simple link to another photo on another site is ok, yes. As most likely, that photo will not be removed in the future. Again, this would simply be a link, and not an inclusion of the photo into the article. 4) There are really no limits. As long as it has to do with military aviation in one way or another, or photography in general, it is ok. You can choose to write about your favorite type of aircraft, a particular air force, a squadron, etc. etc. I hope that helps. Feel free to have me clarify anything, and good luck. -Ray |

Unless the terms and conditions explicitly state that once uploaded a photo can be used by Airfighters in articles or other such items, I would always ask another photographers permission before using it for anything. I don't know if you pay for articles but most photographers wouldn't be happy to find out that their work has been used in a manner that someone else got paid for using their work. Even if you don't pay I say it's common courtesy. |

True, I didn't think about that. Yes, common courtesy will prevail over everything. We haven't paid anybody for articles till now. If it will promote writing, then it is something to consider. But considering our financial situation, or lack there of to put it more correctly, it's not an option at the moment. I introduced the Platinum and Gold memberships to generate some revenue for articles, but as you can see it didn't exactly take off.
I'm just going by what I have seen on other sites. In my opinion, if the article stays on airfighters then it shouldn't be a problem. If it's going to get re-published elsewhere, then it's a whole different issue. Again, that's just my opinion. -Ray |

I've been meaning for some time to write something about the history of 423 Squadron the only thing that's really been holding me back is the lack of pictures of aircraft it flew in its earlier years such as Shorts Sunderland and Consolidated Liberators. There arew some Liberator photos in the database already but unfortunatley none in Canadian markings. It would be hard to find any of these nowadays, there isn't even any at the Shearwater Aviation Museum. I might have to change it to CFB Shearwater's history rather than 423 Squadron.
