Ray/All,

Hope you don't mind me starting this, but to my mind there are a couple of features that could be added to the site to make it SO much more user-friendly so far as the uploading photographer is concerned.

The first is that it's very hard to work out what you've uploaded and what you haven't without trawling through all your pictures physically looking for it. Would it be possible to implement any of the following?

Having entered the reg:
a) a link appears to shots of the aircraft already in the database
b) a link appears to your shots of that aircraft already in the database

OR

c) the "my photos" section has a sortable reg column added

The second thing I would recommend would be when entering a reg in the auto-fill that returns no records in the database, IMHO, what you've entered should automatically appear in the Registration Number box below, and the Code Number and Construction Number boxes should be cleared if they contain data from the previous upload. I've lost count of the number of times that having entered a new reg I've forgotten to change it from the previous upload in the section down below. That might just be me though!! :wink

Look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers,
Karl

Karl

Hi Karl,
No problem, thanks for your input. All good valid points to help the photographers, especially the ones with several hundred photos already in the database. The Reg# in the My Photos section should be fairly easy to do. I'll see if we can get that done soon. The links to already added photos have been asked before and I can see how it can be very useful, so I'll definitely look into getting those done soon as well.

As far as the Auto Fill and persistent data, I will have to do some thinking about that, and see how we can make it happen. Lets leave this for further discussion and input from other photogs, and once agreed upon a solution, we can move forward from there.

Ok, got one thing to report. If you look in My Photos section now, you will see a Cross Search link added in the ID column. That should help things a lot. Please let me know your thoughts on that.

And to continue with this, you will now find a [Search] link on the upload page next to the Registration Number and Construction Number slots. After entering the data, click the link and it will bring up all the photos in the database already with that Reg # or Construction #. This will open in a new window/tab depending on your settings. You'll be able to see your own photos and all others as well.

I hope this is a useful feature and will help out most of you. Karl, is this what you had in mind?

Hey Ray,

Just had a quick play. The functionality added in your 16:04 post is a very welcome addition, IMHO, so thanks for that.

As for the Cross Search, I feel the above pretty much supercedes it for the purposes of my suggestion - that's not to say that others might find other uses for it.

Personally I still think it would be useful to add a sortable Reg column to the displayed data in 'My Photos'.

Thanks for your time and efforts, Ray. It's good to be heard. ::thumb_grin}

Cheers,
Karl

Hi Karl,
Great. I'm glad you can make good use of it. I think we can add another little functionality to the [Search] link which will come in really handy. You'll see that pretty soon.

RE. the Reg # in column, it can easily be added, but it will slow that page a little as it has to query the database to list it on the page. I'll see what I can do about it.

Hi all,
Please check out the [Search] function at the bottom of the Photo Upload Page now. I think you'll be quite pleased. The search function allows you to see inclusions already in the database based on registration number for yourself and the total. Enjoy! :wink

Karl, thanks for the idea.

...and now you'll find a [Search] link directly under the "Aircraft" pick-lists on the photo upload page as well. Just a little more info for you when uploading. Please let me know how you guys feel about these changes/additions and if everything is good, we can make the changes to airlinerdb as well.

If you're not seeing these new search features, please Ctrl+Refresh a couple of times to load the updated files.

Ray,

Another question along a similar theme - When you can have multiple records for a registration, how does the database decide which one it thinks you want?

Obvious areas where this could happen are the oold Russian-style registrations with two digits and a colour (color?) or just about any French aircraft in service.

Would it be possible in situations like this to have a pop-up window appear with the options listed and a check box where the user selects the relevant record to populate the upload data?

You're welcome Mario. I'm glad you find them handy.

Lee, the Auto Fill automatically selects the entry with the "most" data in it. So, if a particular craft has all three, the reg#, code, and Cn, then it will automatically choose that, vs, maybe one that has only the reg# and Cn. Yes, I agree there are a few instances where the registration numbers are identical, in that case, if you can, please use the Cn in the Auto Fill, it will work just as good. In order for the Auto Fill to work, the exact plane must already be in the database. So, please find it and copy/paste the Cn in the Auto Fill and you are ready to go. This has been suggested before, and it is a good idea, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Thanks for the suggestion though. In the meantime, please try the Cn method whenever possible.

Ray,

No worries.

If only other aviation photo databases were as accommodating!
