Just asking what the Airfighters uploading convention is regarding aircraft preserved in museums which have been painted up as an aircraft with a different serial and/or are presented as a different type?

For example, the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon has an actual TB-25N Mitchell bomber USAAF serial 44-29366 on display marked and presented as a TB-25J as '34037' which I think represents 43-4037 which is a genuine B-25J serial.

So how should I enter the data? Do I enter the serial actually visible on the aircraft ('34037', what it represents (43-4037) or the actual 'real' serial of the aircraft (44-29366)?

Also, should it be shown as a TB-25J as originally constructed and the type represented by the museum or a TB-25N which is what it was converted to and technically still is?

This can get horribly murky. Many preserved aircraft have worn multiple military serials in their careers so which one applies? The first? The one worn longest? Also, many have been converted to a later mark, for example the Gloster Meteor NF.11 many of which were converted to Meteor TT.20 target tugs. Several of these have been preserved and are presented as NF.11's but in reality they are still TT.20's with just the winch gear removed.

Not looking for a definitive answer because I don't think one can realistically be given however a steer would be appreciated.

Wow, another tough one Michael. For me, I would go with whatever is depicted in the photo. If an aircraft is wearing "fake" markings then I would list the real one and put somewhere in the remarks section that it is carrying fake serials. I think we did this for a few helicopters in Argentina which were carrying fake numbers. We just went back to the last "known good" configuration.

With the case of the Mitchell, that's pretty tricky. I would enter it as the aircraft type it currently is and whatever it's last registration was for that configuration. Again, noting somewhere in the remarks section what is really happening. And, we promise not to change your remarks Michael.

That's the way that makes most sense for me. If anyone else has a better way, then please say so.

Thanks for the steer on this Ray, is appreciated. Of course, I will probably go ahead and do the opposite of what you just said but that is ego driven photographers for you :wink
