4.5 generation light, multi-role, fighter-bomber. The JAS-39 'Gripen' is Sweden's latest generation fighter. Replacing the Saab 37 'Viggen' from 1996 on, the Gripen has met more export success, that it's predecessor on the international market. The JAS-39A/B is the original version of the Gripen, tailored to Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) specifications. The JAS-39C/D is the international version of the Gripen, designed to meet NATO requirements. Later versions of Sweden's Gripen fleet will be upgraded to the C/D standard. The Gripen is a major contender for Brazil's FX2 contract, and India's MRCA competition.
